Flying? No Fear!: A Handbook for Apprehensive Flyers
Published in Paperback by Summerdale Pub Ltd (June, 1998)
Authors: Adrian Akers-Douglas and George Georgiou
Average review score:

Flying can be fun
I bought a signed copy of this book in 1998, from Captain Akers-Douglas, who provided a very relaxed and comfortable Eurocypria flight from Paphos to Birmingham. The book is informative without being too technical. An excellent book, with good cartoon type pictures. It helped me to understand what really goes on before and during a flight. Captain Akers-Douglas is very entertaining both in print and personally, I would recommend this book to anyone who views flying as an insurmountable obstacle.

Flying? Looking forward to it now!
I have flown on 3 previous occasions, 6 times in all. The last time I was more nervous than ever, no logical reason for this, fear has no logic. Each flight was uneventful and safe but I am still terrified, so I decided to buy this book.
The author, a highly qualified pilot, explained everything that had concerned me about flying, the noises of the engines, the constant ding-dongs of the cabin, the reason why the plane takes off in the first place! Absolutely every fear I had is explained in this book! including absurd thoughts that go through your head!
You realise that the pilot doesn't just turn up and "turn the key of the aircraft" but that there are extensive checks and extensive preparation that goes on before you even leave home for the airport.
I am going on holiday in June 2002 and I am actually looking forward to the flight now, something I couldn't have dreamed of before I read this book. I urge anybody that is scared of flying to buy this book, because I felt it was worth every penny!
If you are a first time flyer and are nervous I also recomend this book, it explains an awful lot, answers questions, and is also very funny!

Food Safety Poster Series Book -15 Posters

Colorful and in English & Spanish
These 15 four color posters help you ensure compliance with FDA/USDA regulations. As you know employees play a vital role in food safety.Make sure they're aware of the regulatory requirements, and just good food safety practices. Our health inspector saw them and I think we gained some points (positive) on our inspection - because it shows we care.We also display these posters in the kitchen and employee break room and in the employee areas.Posters are in both English and Spanish which is critical to use here in Orlando Florida.

Great Colorful Posters - A great Training Aid
In my work as a food service manager I must repeat the same instructions to my employees over and over - these 15 laminated four color posters will constantly remind your emplyees about the importance of food safety and the correct procedures. They are colorful and very informative. We bought two sets one for the kitchen and one to use throught the employee areas of the restaurant. The 15 posters in the set is like having 15 more of me pointing out constantly the importance and proper procedures in food safety!.

Average review score:

first real look at moonwalkers, and their lives
this was, to my knowledge, the first book done on all 12 moonwalkers,/together, and which tells about the men, their respective missions, and rest of lives, upto late 1980's!what they achieved as astronauts, men, and how they ended upin later life! interesting!

TELLS ABOUT ALL MOONWLKERS
This book tells the reader a little about all 12 men that walked on the Moon, and their reflections of their experience, their lives a little, and how Project Apollo and being an astronaut changed their lives forever! Could read 1000 books like this one, and never get tired of it

For Kirk and Covenant: The Stalwart Courage of John Knox
Published in Hardcover by Cumberland House (01 April, 2000)
Authors: Douglas Wilson and George Grant
Average review score:

Another 5 Star book from the Leadership Series...
A great reformer written from an honest perspective, well aware of our own culure... another great one for young and old alike!

Very engaging
I have read 3 or 4 biographies of Knox in the past ten years. Stanford Reid's *Trumpter of God* is considered the standard. But Wilson's is by far the most engaging.

Wilson has not attempted a comprehensive biography. Instead he hits the milestones and highlights what made Knox one of the most interesting figures in Western history. Wilson is very pastoral -- he makes contenporary, practical applications from Knox's that the reader will find very challenging.

After I read this book I bought three more copies.

Forbidden Signs: American Culture and the Campaign Against Sign Language
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (November, 1996)
Author: Douglas C. Baynton
Average review score:

Let's all stop Dumbing the Deaf Down.
The book was sensitive and beautifully written.

There are many things still forbidden to the deaf in the year 2,000 (disgraceful)! Here are a few more sundry attempts to prevent the deaf from exploring their right to fully communicate or make their language fully credible, valuable and valid. I call it DDD or Dumbing the Deaf Down. 1. The linguists, educators and interpreters all say sign language is a visual language, therefore it cannot have a written form. Even the deaf have bought this myth hook, line and sinker. To prove my point, English is a vocal language. Does that mean English should not have books filled with words? No one should be able to write letters, type, keep documents etc.? How loonie that would be. 2. The experts all say, "Home signs are invalid", there's "no use for them", they are "wrong" and they "arn't accepted" (by the Ph.D. community I guess), etc. Who's language is it anyway? Why shouldn't all signs be documented? Why should some signs die when the old deaf ones pass on? Why shouldn't there be a 2 way sign language dictionary that anyone at any age could access? Have no fear! A team of concerned parents are doing just that. As of this writing there are 9,000 signs in written form, and 3,000 left to finish. 1,800 signs are now in alphanumerical order with 10,200 left to be placed in a 2 way dictionary. If anyone has a problem with this and wishes to debate the issue, I'll be more than happey to oblige. wercozy@wvi.com

Absolutely stunning.
Quite honestly, I expected to be bored out of my wits by this book. The subject matter was interesting, but it started out as Baynton's doctoral dissertation, for goodness' sake! It was going to be a dryly written academic bog.

Wrong. Baynton's style is witty and positively lyrical, a pleasure to read. Indeed, I was surprised at the short time it took me to finish.

This is not to say that the book suffered from a lack of hard content- far from it. If "When the Mind Hears" intrigued you, "Forbidden Signs" will leave you riveted. Baynton reaches startling conclusions which are so logical that, in hindsight, they seem self-evident. Of particular interest was his chapter on gender in the oralist movement- you definitely won't see that one coming!

I hate to seem excessively gushy, but Baynton has produced a marvel. I only hope there's an equally good sequel in the works. :c)

The Fossil Factory: A Kid's Guide to Digging Up Dinosaurs, Exploring Evolution, and Finding Fossils
Published in Paperback by Perseus Publishing (January, 1990)
Authors: Niles Eldredge, Douglas Eldredge, Gregory Eldredge, Douglas Eldridge, and Steve Lindblom
Average review score:

A great review for "The Fossil Factory"
This is a great book that tells all about fossils

Entertaining and Comprehensive
I'm rarely so impressed by a book that I write a review. This one, however, is special. The authors are able to convey a great deal of difficult to understand information in a way that is not only straightforward and easy to understand, but also fun and humorous! It explains evolutionary concepts as it guides you through fossil-finding techniques. It is sprinkled with simple experiments to deepen understanding of each concept. My five-year-old sat through the first 50 pages, then protested when I had to stop to cook dinner. I'm with him. We were both learning and loving it.

Free Trade Under Fire
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (April, 2002)
Author: Douglas A. Irwin
Average review score:

Necessity to arguing
Doesnt it always seem that your friends subscribe to the wrong views, and you to the right one? Well, at least for me it is. Whether your pals are from the anarchist wing or the Pat Buchanan camp, or even deviate just a little from your (correct) free trade stance, you should read this book. And even if you believe in the unholy stance of skepticism of free trade , you should read it too, for "The Economist" said that if this book doesnt convince anti-free traders, nothing will; so go ahead and test your faithfulness.

I am not an economist, and I hate reading economics text books filled with useless jargon. Before reading some great books, economics was as complicated as chemistry, physics or calculas to me. But after reading a few books, "Lexus and the Olive Tree", "Mystery of Capital" and "Peddling Prosperty", I realized that it isn't that complicated, its just the economists who create this aura of an esoteric subject.

This book is written in simple language, but when it does use phrases that regular people don't understand, he does something rare - he explains their meaning.

This is an excellent book, but only after reading The Lexus and the Olive Tree. Tom Friedman's book is the main weapon in my debating arsenal, and "Free Trade Under Fire" book gives me a large cache of ammunition, as do Peddling Prospery (or anything else by Paul Krugman like Pop Internationalism, another MUST read), and Henrando de Soto's masterpiece "The Mystery of Capital"(dont even look at his "Other Path", it is simplified and better argued in this "Mystery").

Highly Recommended

Reading This Book Will Make You Smarter
I have had the honor of having the author of this book as a professor in college. Not surprisingly he teaches classes dealing with international trade. All I can say is that he is an economist of the highest order and that he is capable of taking some extrodinarily difficult concepts and explaining them with a level of clarity that make them seem obvious. He takes this teaching approach to his book, making it both intelligent and approachable. If you ever actually wanted to know anything about international trade and even be able to discuss in a relevant manner the points at hand, read this book. You will be smarter for having done so.

From the Ground Up: The Business of Building in the Age of Money
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (November, 1993)
Author: Douglas Frantz
Average review score:

Decision and indecision - the consequences for the developer
For those interested in decision theory, the author does a sterling job of tracing the impacts that different approaches to decision-making, by different parties, has on the development of a complex and unique mixed use project:

"But like it or not, the power to make these final decisions rested with the various public bodies overseeing the compliance with the city's regulations" (p.106) "It was that an architectural decision had been made by a political body that appeared to care little about archictecture..." (p.105) "Still undecided, however, was the shape of the atrium. This delay was having troubling consequences for the entire construction schedule because the city refused to issue a demolition permit until it saw the final design drawings..." "The developers knew they were unhappy with the atrium but they did not know why" (p.154) "They bungled it because they wouldn't do anything without having three decisions" (p.184) "The debate over the colour of glass dragged on for months" (p.202) "Mancini said he would take the matter under advisement. He was not ready to make a decision on the spot" (p.209) "While Johnson applauded group decisions intellectually, he felt strongly that there was not always a 'right' decision for every dilemma" (p.229")

The book clearly articulates the dialogue between the different decision-making parties and makes for an interesting case study.

Ideal case study for developers
My students - this was, for years, the best-liked textbook in Berkeley real estate courses - saw this well-written history of an actual commercial development as a sure-fire hit movie. We selected the cast - not too difficult: incompetent and corrupt contractors, sublimely ignorant city officials, totally dense bankers, a brilliant artist who got ripped off, shady lawyers, venal professors - well, they lost forty million dollars or so. Reporter Frantz covered the (subsiding) ground with hearty humor but without serious libel. The reader is supposed to do the numbers.
